The UKKA Urges UK Government to Support WHO Resolution on CKD

The UK Kidney Association has joined leading kidney health organisations in calling for UK government support for the World Health Organisation’s draft resolution on CKD. The resolution on Reducing the burden of non-communicable disease through kidney health promotion and disease prevention, which will be considered at the 78th World Health Assembly in May 2025, recognises the urgent need for global action to prevent and manage CKD.

Letters have been sent to the Chief Medical Officers of the UK, urging them to ensure that the UK fully endorses the resolution. The letter was signed by key figures from across the kidney community, including UKKA Presidents Clare Morlidge and Katie Vinen, alongside representatives from Kidney Research UK, Kidney Care UK, the National Kidney Federation, and the National Clinical Director for Renal Medicine, Prof Smeeta Sinha.

With CKD affecting over 850 million people worldwide, including an estimated 7.2 million in the UK, the resolution seeks to elevate kidney disease as a priority non-communicable disease (NCD) alongside conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. It aims to promote awareness, strengthen prevention and early detection, improve access to treatment, and support global health systems in managing CKD.

While this is ultimately a government-level decision, the UKKA is actively working to ensure kidney disease is prioritised on the global health agenda. We will continue to engage with policymakers and international partners to push for meaningful action.
