Aim:

  • Enable networking and collaboration among nephrologists, primary care professionals, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Share good practice, innovations, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support the development of educational resources, professional training, and continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities.
  • Provide a forum to address service challenges, pathway redesign, and workforce development.
  • Inform and contribute to local and national CKD policy, strategy, and research priorities.

Workstreams:

eGFR working group

The eGFR Working Group is dedicated to improving the accuracy and equity of kidney function assessment in the UK and beyond. Recent research led by the group has highlighted shortcomings in widely used creatinine-based equations, particularly among Black, South Asian and other ethnic minority populations, where eGFR tends to overestimate measured kidney function, leading to delayed diagnosis and inequitable prescribing of therapies. Findings emphasise the importance of selecting and validating equations that perform consistently across diverse groups to improve CKD detection and management.

Key activities of the eGFR Working Group:

  • Conducting large-scale studies, including multicentre 'Evaluating ethnic disparities in kidney function assessment: Performance of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) equations in a diverse UK cohort (AIM CKD UK study)' o f >15,000 patients to evaluate and compare eGFR equation performance across ethnically diverse UK populations - submitted for publication.
  • Leading systematic reviews and meta-analyses on creatinine, cystatin C, and combined equations to guide biomarker use in clinical practice - submitted for publication.
  • Collaborating with ERA-EDTA to promote adoption of best-performing equations such as the revised Lund-Malmo and European Kidney Function Consortium models, which have shown superior accuracy across ethnicities.
  • Working with the KFRE Working Group to validate kidney failure risk prediction in minority ethnic populations, thereby addressing health inequalities ensuring equitable prognostic tools for CKD progression and treatment planning.
