A huge thank you to Prof Paul Cockwell as he steps down as medical president of the UKKA

On behalf of the UKKA and of the wider kidney community, we would like to take the opportunity to thank Paul for his outstanding leadership as president of the UKKA over the past three years. It seems hard to believe that as he began that leadership, we were still in the midst of the COVID pandemic and the very newly formed UKKA was in its infancy. Paul started his post by ensuring that kidney patients affected by COVID were prioritised and protected; and by supporting kidney services to return to normal after significant disruption.

Paul went on to lead work to ensure that a vision to integrate all members of the kidney MPT and medical workforces in a single organisation reached fruition, as shown by our recent highly successful Edinburgh meeting.

Along the journey, he has led the establishment of our special interest groups and overseen a much-valued leadership training programme. He has championed the equality agenda and supported the quality improvement programme as it moves to nationally driven home therapies and advanced kidney care projects whilst continuing to deliver his own clinical and research portfolios to the highest standards.

Often understated, he has epitomised good leadership - he is a fantastic listener, is highly inclusive, and is always happy to work hard in leadership and supportive roles. He has acted as a role model and mentor to his UKKA colleagues and to many beyond. We rely on his continued wise counsel and support but are glad that in the short term, he may have more time to enjoy his cycling, a glass of good wine, and a chance to listen to his Taylor Swift CDs!
