Arthur Colville Kennedy, one of the pioneers of renal medicine and in particular the treatment of acute renal failure, died on 30th December 2009. He was born and trained in Glasgow where he became the Muirhead Chair of Medicine (1979-88) and was President of the European Dialysis and Transplant Association (1972-5) and of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (1986-8). Following retiral he held a number of posts including Chairmanship of the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board and the Presidency of the BMA. He was characterised by his energy and determination in pursuit of his goals: a reserved, modest and courteous man who also made many friends. He is survived by his wife Nancy and their two daughters, a granddaughter and two great grandchildren.
