Enabling kidney care's contribution to NHS zero

Can your unit take part in a sustainability group scholar programme?

A new UKKA Sustainable Kidney Care Committee has been set up in partnership with the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) and the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition.

Committee workstreams cover:

  • Action Learning and Education
  • Procurement, Infrastructure and Innovation
  • Sustainable Care Pathways.

The Action Learning and Education Subgroup is proposing a group scholars’ programme to forge a link between local kidney care units and the three workstreams, building on previous partnerships which set up the Green Nephrology Programme to support sustainable kidney care. Outputs from this included a comparative carbon footprint of haemodialysis provided at home vs. in-centre, as well as a carbon footprint of a local renal service and case studies of local green initiatives.

Would your unit/service be interested in being part of this?

National funding is being sought for the training and supervision costs of 10 scholars from September 2022. Participating units would each put forward one NHS kidney care health professional or health service manager. In doing so, units would be giving a commitment that each scholar would have 1-2 protected days per week to work on a sustainability project within their organisation over the course of the year.

The goal is to create a community of practice and increase knowledge about sustainability challenges and solutions in kidney care for sharing across the sector. It would also refresh earlier partnership working, gain strategic influence, spread good practice and grow the next generation of leaders in sustainable kidney care.
