A live webinar and Q&A session on calciphylaxis, a rare and severe condition often seen in individuals with kidney disease undergoing dialysis, will be held. This session will feature:

Professor Smeeta Sinha, Consultant Nephrologist, who will discuss the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and latest evidence on calciphylaxis. Professor Sinha is a Consultant Nephrologist at Salford Royal Hospital, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, and an Honorary Professor at the Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre, University of Manchester. She specializes in chronic kidney disease (CKD), metabolic stone disease, glomerulonephritis, and vascular calcification. Her research focuses on CKD-mineral bone disorder, with particular expertise in vascular calcification and calciphylaxis. She is an internationally recognized key opinion leader in calciphylaxis and has led clinical trials for this condition. Additionally, she serves as the National Clinical Director for Renal Medicine at NHS England.

Dr. Emma McMullen, Consultant Dermatologist, who will cover the diagnosis, differentials, and wound care for calciphylaxis. Dr. McMullen began her dermatology career in Salford in 2003 and has been a full-time NHS consultant since 2010. She is the Acute Lead for the Greater Manchester Dermatology Programme and has a keen interest in calciphylaxis, hidradenitis suppurativa, acute/inpatient dermatology, and skin cancer. She is also actively involved in research and teaching at both pre- and postgraduate levels.

Dr. Sharon Huish, Renal Dietitian, who will chair the session. Dr. Huish is an advanced practice dietitian and the service lead for the kidney dietetic service at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. She specializes in Chronic Kidney Disease related Mineral Bone Disorders (CKD-MBD) and has conducted PhD research on vitamin D metabolism in haemodialysis patients. Her current research explores patient experiences of calciphylaxis. Dr. Huish chairs the UK CKD-MBD Clinical Study Group and co-leads the rare disease group for calciphylaxis. She is passionate about dietetic prescribing and promoting research roles for dietitians, serving as a committee member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) dietitian prescriber subgroup and supporting research activity for the BDA Kidney Dietitian Specialist Group.
