We are pleased to announce the launch of a new patient information leaflet, Hepatitis B Vaccination for People with Chronic Kidney Disease, produced in collaboration with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and NHS England.

This comprehensive guide provides essential information about hepatitis B, the importance of vaccination for kidney patients and details on the vaccination process. It is specifically designed to support individuals with CKD who are at a slightly higher risk of hepatitis B due to treatments such as dialysis or transplantation.

UKKA President Clare Morlidge played a key role in the development and approval of this leaflet, attending all relevant meetings and ensuring the content developed meets the needs of kidney patients. The project, which was showcased at UK Kidney Week last year, has now been finalised after a thorough approval process.

The leaflet outlines the vaccination schedule, potential side effects, and the importance of completing the full course to ensure maximum protection. It also highlights the need for regular antibody checks and booster doses for kidney patients, who may take longer to develop sufficient immunity.

We encourage all kidney patients, particularly those undergoing or planning to start dialysis, to speak to their kidney nurse or doctor about getting vaccinated. The leaflet is available at kidney units and clinics, and further copies can be requested from healthcare providers.

Further information can be found in the vaccine manufacturer’s information leaflet that comes with the vaccine. If you do not have a copy or you would like one, please ask your kidney nurse for one.
