Leadership and home dialysis

DAYLife leadership

Why do we need leadership?

Studies have often cited the importance of leadership in the growth of home dialysis services.

Challenging and influencing attitudes takes leadership skills.  Quality improvement leaders taking part in the DAYLife pilot project were offered the opportunity to take part in a two-day residential renal leadership training programme prior to the project launch.

This training was offered to multi-professionals, clinicians, registrars and allied health professionals. We aim to empower the multi-professional team at all levels to have the confidence to identify and test changes, engage their teams and lead improvement locally.

What does it feel like to lead?

When I casually expressed my interest in getting ‘some experience in leadership or management’...to the clinical service lead of the renal department a year ago, I did not know the Kidney Quality Improvement Partnership (KQuIP) was what he had in mind! Within weeks, I was on my way to Kegworth to attend the Shortsmoor renal leadership course, became good friends with Lynda and Beth (peritoneal dialysis and home haemodialysis sisters) and began my learning journey with KQuIP…

Key learning from DAYLife so far

  • Leadership should continue to be invested in alongside clinical interventions to ensure sustainable improvement

  • Additional mentoring for new improvement leaders to share and reflect on putting leadership into action and offer peer support could be of benefit.
